CBC 60 - "Going for Two"

Our barrel pick team liked the barrel choices from @jackdaniels_us so much that they wanted to take two of them. In the end we selected one barrel and we're excited to enjoy it.

On the nose there's lots of smokey char. The taste is big and sweet up front with a long warming finish.

This barrel was 5 years, 6 mo the old at bottling and clocks in at 127.4 proof

Cleveland Bourbon Club is excited to welcome our 6

Cleveland Bourbon Club is excited to welcome our 64th Single Barrel private selection.

This 5 year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon was sourced by the @riverrootsbarrelco, which is an awesome project headed up by CBC members @inorite and @bourbon_buddy.

It clocks in at 126.76 proof

The nose is sweet, reminding of strawberries and cream Cream Savers candy

The tastes is big and oily up front, sweet with a peppery mid palate and a long warm finish.

The nose has hints of vanilla and chocolate, think Charleston Chew

The initial taste is big and oily up front, with a long sweet caramel finish.

Tonight the Cleveland Bourbon Club selected our 64th Single Barrel, a 5 year old bourbon from @riverrootsbarrelco.

The team tasted from 6 barrels and took a 128.1 proof monster.

We can't wait to get our hands on these bottles, and for you to try it at a local bar.

Today we picked CBC 63, A 9 year 7 month Knob Cree

Today we picked CBC 63, A 9 year 7 month Knob Creek Single Barrel.

The nose was very sweet and so was the taste. It came from warehouse K, rack 6 row 22 and is 137.9 proof in the barrel.

We're excited about this pick and can't wait for delivery

This month's theme was extra age

A was a 24 year old Rhetoric from @orphanbarrel. This one had big pickle notes on the nose

B was a 22 year old Blade and Bow a @diageo product with lots of great fruity notes

C was a 24 year old bottling by @boutiqueywhisky it is a Pre-Fire Heaven Hill aged for 12 years in Kentucky, then 12 in Scotland. This was strange on the nose in taste with lots of salty, fatty notes and a thick viscous mouthfeel.

This month's theme was Rye

A was a 6 year old 2020 Thomas H. Handy Rye. 129 proof

B was CBC pick # 56, a 4 year old New Riff Rye. 107.8 proof

C was a Non Age Stated 2017 release of High West Bourye. 92 proof. Their website claims all whiskies are over 10 years old, with some components as old as 16 years

This month's theme was wheat

A was a 14 year old Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond decanter from 2018

B was an estimated 5-7 year old Maker's Mark gold wax bottling from the 90's. The club has drank this before and has loved it both times.

C was a 14 year old Heaven Hill Select Stock Wheat Whiskey from their You Do Bourbon tour, bottled in 2023

May 2023’s blind tasting

A was a 6 year old 86 proof Old Crow bottled by National Distillers jn 1973.

B was a 6 year old Michael’s Toaster Barrel bottled in 2015

C was a 1972 Hoffman decanter, aged 100 months and bottled at 90 proof

As a bonus treat, the hosts served a Death & Co Old Fashioned made with an old Beam decanter.

Today, the Cleveland Bourbon Club picked our 61st

Today, the Cleveland Bourbon Club picked our 61st single barrel, a 5 year old Tennessee Whiskey (our first) from @jackdaniels_us

This barrel was aged in one of their hotter rickhouses, so warm in fact that the warehouse employees hate going in there to move barrels. This barrel clocks in at 128.4 proof.

The barrel selection team was unanimous on this barrel and we're very excited to add this to our collection.

A couple weeks ago, Cleveland Bourbon Club picked

A couple weeks ago, Cleveland Bourbon Club picked our 60th single barrel, a 6 year old 1792 Full Proof. Barrel Proof was 129, and it will be bottled at 125.

This barrel has buttered Brioche and Dandelion greens on the nose, with a funky, oaky butterscotch taste.

It was aged in Warehouse N up on the 15th level.

The tasting panel says this was one of our best 1792 picks yet.

April 2023’s blind tasting took us on another fu

April 2023’s blind tasting took us on another fun adventure, this time by pairing the pours with pancakes made from grains associated with each whiskey.

We were served rye, wheat and spelt cakes to go along with a rye recipe bourbon, a wheater and a bourbon that had spelt in the mash bill.

We tasted CBC 42, a 5 year old @smoothambler bourbon, CBC 44, our second Weller Full Proof and the surprise of the night, a 6 year old @watersheddistillery bourbon finished in Apple Brandy casks

Most people had the watershed as a rye or some sort of rum finished bourbon.

This month I included a box and whisker plot to show what the group thought of each pour. The X indicates the average score. Cheers!

Cleveland Bourbon Club is excited to announce the selection of our 59th single barrel.

Old Forester Barrel Strength, barreled on May 16, 2018 (it’ll be 5 years old at bottling).

This barrel was aged in Warehouse L, Row 1, Tier 3 and is 131.8 proof as of today.

This is a strong start to the 2023 barrel season and will be available to taste at our amazing partner bars upon bottling.

March 2023’s meeting was another killer 4 pour m

March 2023’s meeting was another killer 4 pour meeting.

We received a hint that we’ve tasted all of these pours before, which got everyone’s minds racing and the predictions flowing.

At the end we learned I that all pours were CBC private barrel selections with a twist.

All four samples were proofed down to 101 to match the WTKS.

A was CBC #36, an 11 year old Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit we call Bubbly Jock

B was CBC #45, a huge delicious @elijahcraig Barrel Proof called Almost Hazmat (it was 139.6 when we selected it)

C was CBC #4, a 9 year old @knobcreek Single Barrel, from an era when our barrels didn’t get names or stickers

D was CBC #19, an 8 year old @1792bourbon Full Proof called Beetlejuice (also called Without Regrets). This barrel is generally considered to be one of CBC’s best picks

Our practice of blind tasting makes meetings a great experience, but adding variables like equal proofs takes the tasting experience to a whole other level

February 2023’s meeting continued the trend of creativity and surprises

Members were treated to a double blind where each seat had the same pours, but in varying orders to cut down on the bias, table talk and cross pollination of notes and opinions.

Upon reveal we learned that we were tasting CBC #54, a Malted Wheat Bourbon from @doorknockerwhiskey, a 14 year old @foursquarerumusa Redoutable that was aged in Ex-Bourbon and Ex-Madeira casks, a 7 year old MGP Rye bottled by @nashvillebarrelco Selected by @bourbon_buddy and friends and @heavenhilldistillery 17.

January 2023's CBC meeting was one of the most interesting in recent memory.

We were presented with 3 pours, a tobacco leaf, a piece of chocolate, a pour of @foundersbrewing KBS beer and a pour of @wildturkey 101 as a reference sample.

Upon reveal we learned that we were tasting an 86 proof National Distillers Old Granddad, a KBS finished @bardstownbourbonco bourbon and our very own 15 year old @knobcreek Single Barrel lovingly Mature Content.

Last week was pretty, PRETTY good.

The CBC received two barrels of whiskey that we are extremely excited about. This nearly 4.5 yr, 105.7pf @newriff Barrel Proof Single Barrel, “Good Housekeeping” is really different than anything we’ve picked before and it’s absolutely delicious. They’re doing some amazing stuff down in Newport, and we’re really lucky to have gotten the opportunity to pick 3 barrels with them so far.

As a club, we’ve picked a BUNCH of @elijahcraig barrels. Half a dozen to be exact. All of us were shocked when we found out we had the chance to pick a barrel proof version, and this one is special. It dropped in proof from 139.6 when we tasted it to 137.8 at bottling. It’s over 9.5 years old and it’s already considered by a bunch of us as one of the best barrels we’ve picked, and we have the fine folks @heavenhilldistillery to thank. The holidays can be a bit much, but all of this brown liquor should help ease our pain, I think.
